Environmental cause is fast replacing every other issue globally. In India, air pollution, use of hazardous chemicals, poor management of waste, growing water scarcity, falling groundwater tables, water pollution, preservation and quality of forests, biodiversity loss, and land/soil degradation are some of the major environmental issues faced today.
Environmental issues are one of the primary causes of disease, health issues and long term livelihood impact for India. Also, according to a study by World Bank, environmental degradation costs India around USD80 billion per year which amounts to around 5.7% of the GDP.
While inhabitants all across contribute to degradation of the environment, they want the government of the day alone, to address upon the issue. That has to change, and change with some sense of urgency. Going green is not a choice anymore, it is a responsibility. While the government engage in many initiatives, from time to time, it would never be enough to the vastly populous country like India.
